We’re talking about Jules Miller<\/a>, founder of The Nue Co, who was led by illness to founding this company.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jules Miller says she got so sick that she had an internal hemorrhage. \u201cI was tired and bloated and didn’t lead a normal life anymore. And that’s when I started thinking about food, wellness, and supplements. \u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

That was six years ago and leading a stressful<\/a> life in London, and Jules, who was 25, was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She started taking the supplement to try to alleviate the problem but found that nothing worked. She says some made her feel bad, and she worried that most of the pills she had tried were full of fillers and plumping agents.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At this point, many of us might have plunged<\/a> into her predicament with depression, anxiety, or anger, but Jules had a secret weapon – her grandfather was a chemist at Cambridge University. So with her grandfather – the late Professor George Miller – she began researching supplement formulations and ingredients.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

“It was a great idea, there were brands that were supposed to help you, but they contain ingredients that are clinically proven to cause other symptoms,” says Jules, now 31.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Her work with her grandfather inspired<\/a> Jules to start her own natural supplement business. Four years ago, she launched Nue.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, the company has annual revenue of $ 10 million (\u00a3 7.8 million). Jules says that sales this year so far have increased six times compared to two years ago, which she attributes to the concern of more people about their basic health<\/a> in the face of the Coronavirus pandemic<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Julius was born in London, but her family moved to the South American country when she was a few months old, with Spanish as her first language.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

She returned to the capital of the United Kingdom<\/a> with her parents when she was seven years old, after school she studied philosophy at the University of Birmingham, before working in the field of advertising in London. Prior to launching Nue, she was head of business development at vegan food company Detox Kitchen.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Looking back to when Nu started, Jules says she was fearless of a thing.<\/p>\n

“I think if I launched another job now, I wouldn’t have the confidence that I had at the time,” she says. \u201cI was so conceited, I jotted down a list of things I didn’t know, people who might have an answer and emailed them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I contacted two people, Natalie Maisonette, founder of fashion retail store Net-a-Porter, and Harvey Spivak, president of US fitness<\/a> company Equinox. Fortunately, they answered Jules’s call, and they offered her advice.<\/p>\n

I made a supplement to relieve IBS and then other items have followed, such as vitamins, and more recently, skin treatments.<\/p>\n

The company was initially based in Cambridge,<\/a> but within its first year of trading it moved to New York, Jules says this was to allow it to take better advantage of the fact that the United States is the largest market for nutritional supplements.<\/p>\n

“About 80% of Americans take vitamins or other supplements, but Brits are less open to taking them.”<\/p>\n

The supplement sector is booming globally, with a report last year saying it is expected to see annual sales rise to $ 210 billion (\u00a3 160 billion) by 2026, up from $ 125 billion (\u00a3 95 billion) three years ago.<\/p>\n

Nue started selling through its website four years ago, but its products are now stocked by a number of retailers, and it has one store of its own, in New York.<\/p>\n

$ 11.5 million, including from the consumer goods<\/a> giant Unilever, but Jules and her husband, Charlie Gower, remain the largest shareholders. He is also the Director of Operations, while Jules is the CEO.<\/p>\n

Caroline Beaton, a British nutritional therapist, says it is good for the company to talk about exactly what goes into its products. \u201cFew people understand what goes into their supplements other than the nutritional ingredients they are looking for,\u201d she says. \u201cGreat clarity about this is good for the industry. There will always be a market for low-cost products<\/a>, but some people appreciate paying more for the purity. \u201d<\/p>\n

The National Health Service recommends taking vitamin D tablets if you are not getting enough sunlight. This is because our bodies create vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight.<\/p>\n
