Billionaire Elon Musk has offered inventors<\/a> $100 million in prize money to develop ways to combat global warming by removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere or ocean.<\/p>\n

In January, Musk announced his intention to offer $100 million in prizes and announced the rules of the competition on April 22. It will last four years until Earth Day 2025.<\/p>\n

Carbon projects have already received support from Silicon Valley<\/a> startups, government officials concerned about slow emission reductions, and sources of emissions, including oil companies seeking to offset their climate impacts.<\/p>\n

The technology is not yet commercially viable. Carbon removal can cost more than $ 300 per metric tonne in a world that emits greenhouse gases each year, the equivalent of about 50 billion tons of carbon dioxide.<\/p>\n

Carbon capture and storage have aroused increasing interest as global warming has melted glaciers, intensified tropical storms, and led to “flooding on a sunny day” in an increasing number of coastal areas. As countries work to reduce emissions, scientists say carbon removal technology will also be crucial to achieving zero emissions by 2050.<\/p>\n

US President Joe Biden has said the United States\u00a0intends to reduce carbon emissions by at least half by 2030 and achieve zero emissions<\/a> by the middle of the century. The US president has announced a climate summit for dozens of world leaders. The summit will take place over two days and will be attended by about 40 countries and organizations.<\/p>\n

Leading leaders include Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Chinese leader Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n
