Ukraine Gate &#8211; June 23, 2021 \u2013 International News<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reactor is the oldest to be rebuilt since the 2011 disaster and needed special approval to extend its life beyond the standard 40-year limit. Most reactors in Japan remain closed after the accident, highlighting shortcomings in regulation and control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tatsujiro Suzuki, a former deputy head of the Cabinet&#8217;s Atomic Energy Commission, said he had doubts about how the restart was approved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said he was concerned about the lack of transparency and the use of subsidies to get the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ukrgate.com\/eng\/?p=7851\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7851\">necessary <\/a>approval to restart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mihama is one of 16 reactors to receive either preliminary or final approval to restart, compared to 54 reactors that once supplied about a third of Japan&#8217;s electricity to Fukushima.
