The outbreak of famine in southern Madagascar is reported to be the first and possibly the only one caused by climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Arduino Mangoni, deputy director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) in Madagascar, hunger outbreaks are linked to conflict in other countries. In particular, he singled out cases in Yemen, South Sudan and Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“We have several acute events, such as droughts in the last five years, sandstorms, probably caused by soil erosion and deforestation in the last 20-30 years, and, of course, the effects of Covid-19,” Mangoni added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The south of Madagascar has been hit by the worst drought in 40 years. One WFP spokesman said he had never seen children in this condition before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cReally skin and bones. I have worked in several countries on the continent, including the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic and Darfur, but I have never seen children in such a situation, \u201dhe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
People have also exhausted their usual methods of survival, such as selling kitchen utensils.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe have high prices, huge inflation, especially food and water prices. In addition, we are vulnerable to the “dahalo” – bandits who are destroying the territory, “- said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to WFP, about 500,000 children under the age of five are malnourished. It is estimated that 110,000 of them will be severely malnourished by April 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To help the people of southern Madagascar, WFP has already expanded its diet and nutrition programs. The agency requested $ 69 million over the next six months to provide this emergency assistance<\/p>\n\n\n\n
