A thick haze of toxic smog hung over the Indian capital, exacerbated by the burning of crop waste in the surrounding farmland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This reduced visibility, and the air quality index (AQI) reached 470 on a scale of 500. This level of pollution means that the air will affect healthy people and already sick people are severely affected by smog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Graded Response Action Plan, air quality should encourage states and local authorities to take emergency measures, including closing schools, imposing “odd-even” restrictions on private cars based on their license plates, and stopping all construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The government and private institutions should reduce the use of private transport by 30%, and city residents should limit their exposure to the outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Meteorological conditions will be extremely unfavorable for the dispersal of pollutants until November 18, 2021 due to the weak wind from the lull during the night,” the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week, local authorities ordered to stop burning in brick kilns, increase the frequency of mechanized cleaning and reduce waste incineration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The concentration of toxic PM2.5 solids averaged 329 micrograms per cubic meter of air. The government sets “safe” PM2.5 at 60 micrograms per cubic meter of air for 24 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
PM2.5 particles are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, but they enter the bloodstream and can cause severe respiratory illnesses, including lung cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
India’s efforts to reduce the incineration of agricultural waste, which is a major source of winter air pollution, by spending billions of rupees over the past four years have done little to prevent a sharp deterioration in air quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Delhi, often considered the world’s most polluted capital, faces extremely bad air in winter due to stubble burning, emissions from transport, out-of-town coal-fired power plants and other industrial emissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
