On Friday, Foreign Minister Anthony Blinken spoke with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and “expressed concern over China’s continued military, diplomatic and economic pressure on Taiwan,” the statement said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The conversation took place ahead of a virtual summit of President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Monday night after Washington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Blinken and Wang discussed preparations for the summit, with the Secretary of State “urging Beijing to engage in a constructive dialogue to resolve the issues around the Taiwan Strait peacefully and in the\u00a0interests of the Taiwanese people\u00a0.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It will be recalled that relations between the world’s two largest economies have deteriorated in part due to the problems of Taiwan’s self-governing democratic territory claimed by Beijing, as well as trade relations, human rights abuses and other issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chinese military last month carried out a record number of incursions into the island’s air defense zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
