Walrus tusk and sperm whale teeth found in parcels at Kyiv customs –<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDuring the customs clearance of two international postal items, Kyiv customs officers found 1 animal tusk and 8 teeth and statuettes of them. Previously, experts on marine fauna suggested that it was a walrus tusk, and the teeth belonged to sperm whales, \u201dthe statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both shipments were sent by a man and a woman from the same village in the Odessa region to Germany and France. The goods were declared as souvenirs and furniture accessories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe scanning system showed a clear discrepancy between the actual content stated in the documents. And already during the customs inspection 1 tusk 65 cm long and 8 teeth were found, 3 of which were decorated as decorative products, \u201dthe State Customs Service said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trade in specimens of these animals is governed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Citizens did not have any CITES permits to export from Ukraine or import to the destination country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The tusks and teeth were removed by customs. Administrative protocols have been drawn up against Ukrainians who sent these items abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
