Retired US General Philip Breedlove, former commander of the Allied Forces in Europe, said the world had misjudged the capabilities of the Ukrainian people. His words were made during a meeting of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (Helsinki Commission of the United States) on Wednesday, March 23 .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The world has misjudged the ability of the Ukrainian people to fight and misjudged their will to fight. Mr. Putin was also wrong in both cases, “he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Breedlove stressed the need to provide Ukraine with coastal cruise missiles, including for the defense of Mariupol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Putin uses all new weapons, so why do we call escalation that Ukraine requires similar capabilities? I insist on cruise missiles of the Coast Guard, because Ukraine has asked for them before, and they were denied. And now we see the Russian fleet shelling Mariupol from “The Russian navy is threatening the army with new asymmetric capabilities, and Ukraine is still without cruise missiles,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, the general stated the need to provide the Ukrainian military with MiG fighter jets, which Ukraine has not yet received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“The Ukrainian Air Force uses the MiGs they already have quite well. Therefore, I think they will do well with any MiGs they can get. I also agree that it is important to provide Ukraine with medium and high missiles. “It is the combination of surface-to-air missiles and MiGs that will really make a difference,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Breedlove also added that Israel’s Iron Dome installations, which President Zelensky had requested from the Knesset, would be ineffective in the war against Russia. He explained his opinion by saying that they were “designed to shoot down smaller missiles.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“\u2026 I would first focus on supplying S-300s and possibly S-400s, which will give Ukrainians more opportunities at medium and high altitudes,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the meeting, Breedlove’s opinion was supported by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal and his Republican counterpart Roger Wicker, who called for greater military support for Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Michael Kimmidge, a former member of the US State Department’s Policy Planning Office, also spoke at the Helsinki Commission, stressing that in the event of the defeat of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, one should not expect a change of regime in Russia. He called for sanctions to be imposed “on a policy of deterrence, not for regime change, but to help Washington cope with the current regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
