The research vessel “Noosphere” is not yet able to return to the port of registration – Odessa, due to a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.\u00a0Therefore, the ship will be based in Cape Town in the coming months.\u00a0This was reported by the National Antarctic Research Center .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, yesterday the research ship “Noosphere” entered the port of Cape Town (South Africa), completing the first Antarctic season. Thus, for the first time in 20 years, Ukraine carried out an Antarctic expedition with its own scientific fleet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is reported that the journey from the Falkland Islands took 19 days and was quite difficult. As the team jokes: “for the quiet passage through the Drake Strait back and forth, we” paid “for the bad weather across the Atlantic Ocean.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Our sailors have been traveling for 4 months (” Noosphere “went on the first flight under the blue-yellow flag from Odessa to Antarctica on January 28 this year). In total, 16,000 miles (26,000 km) were covered from Ukraine to the icy continent, and then from there to Chile and through the Falklands to South Africa. For comparison: this is twice the length of North and South America combined, “- said in a scientific center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The research center also reminded that the first flight to Antarctica, the flagship of the Ukrainian research fleet, ensured the rotation of winterers at the Ukrainian station “Academician Vernadsky”, the change of polar explorers at the Polish station “Artsovsky” and conducting unique research on the Southern Ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
