Context<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019, Kovalev was elected a People’s Deputy of the 9th convocation for the 186th district (Kherson region) from the Servant of the People party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the start of the large-scale war, the people’s deputy left for the occupied Kherson region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 28, the “Servant of the People” party appealed to the Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova and the head of the Security Service of Ukraine Ivan Bakanov with a call to “thoroughly and comprehensively investigate all the facts and circumstances of his stay in the temporarily occupied territory and his communication with the occupying forces.”
Since April 3, Kovalev has been excluded from the parliamentary faction of the political party “Servant of the People” in the Verkhovna Rada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prior to that, the party suspended the membership of the people’s deputy in its faction due to suspicion of treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The party asked the law enforcement officers to investigate whether Kovalev sided with Russia in the Kherson region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings\u00a0have been initiated against the deputy\u00a0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of June, it became known that a deputy’s car was blown up in the occupied Kherson region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine Kyrylo Budanov confirmed the information about the detonation of the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On June 22, the mass media spread information that Kovalev “died” as a result of a car explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, shortly after the incident, Kovalev\u00a0\u00a0appeared in a video\u00a0, in which, lying in a hospital bed, he declared that “sabotage by the special services of Ukraine” had been committed against him, and also added that he would continue to work in his constituency.\u00a0– “Until the end of the mandate in 2023”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
