This is the first opportunity in such a competition to present their credentials to a national television audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The five Conservative MPs running for prime minister initially faced hostile questions from invited voters and politicians as anchors of trust and honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This allowed candidates Tom Tugendhat, a well-known backbencher, and former equalities minister Kemi Badenoch to present themselves as politicians untainted and ready to embark on a new path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the topic of “taxation” was the most controversial during the debate.
