The situation in the region worsened at the beginning of August. This week, three people were killed in renewed fighting, with each side accusing the other of violating the ceasefire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baku said it had lost a soldier, while the Karabakh army said two of its soldiers had been killed in the latest clashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the 2020 war, Armenia ceded to Azerbaijan part of the territory it had controlled for decades, and Russia deployed about 2,000 peacekeepers to monitor the ceasefire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The reaction of the USA and the EU<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken addressed the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan on August 5 to call for dialogue in the conflict over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blinken spoke separately by phone with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, State Department spokesman Ned Price said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Secretary Blinken assured Prime Minister Pashinyan that the United States is closely monitoring the situation in and around Nagorno-Karabakh, ” Price\u00a0said\u00a0in a statement about the conversation with the Armenian prime minister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his conversations with the two leaders, Blinken “called for direct dialogue between Armenia and Azerbaijan to resolve issues related to or resulting from the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict,” Price said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, also\u00a0spoke\u00a0by phone with Aliyev on August 5 and expressed his concern about the growing tensions in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michel stressed that the European Union will continue its efforts to ensure long-term peace and stability in the region in accordance with the Brussels peace agenda, the\u00a0\u00a0press service of the President of Azerbaijan\u00a0reports .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aliyev told Michel that “all responsibility for the tension that has arisen lies with Armenia.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aliyev also said that Armenia has not withdrawn its troops from the Karabakh region as agreed in the November 10, 2020, Moscow-brokered ceasefire that ended the six-week war that has\u00a0reportedly\u00a0killed more than 6,500 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Michel himself noted on Twitter that he had telephone conversations with both Aliyev and Pashinyan.\u00a0“Working together to ensure de-escalation and open communications. Ahead of our next leaders’ meeting in Brussels, continued dialogue and concrete progress on all agenda items is key. The EU remains committed,”\u00a0Michel\u00a0wrote .<\/p>\n\n\n\n
