American electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla<\/a> Inc. recalls approximately 135 thousand Model S sedans produced in 2012-2018. and Model X crossovers 2016-2018. production due to perceived touchscreen issues.<\/p>\n \n In January, the US<\/a> National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) asked the company to recall 158,000 vehicles. A malfunction in the memory chips led to the failure of the displays, as well as the heating system, turn signals, and driver assistance systems.<\/p>\n \n The difference in numbers is due to the fact that some of the NHTSA vehicles<\/a> have already had their eMMC drives replaced or new touchscreens installed.<\/p>\n \n The agency says that problems with screens can appear after 5-6 years of using the car. Tesla tried to fix it with over-the-air updates but to no avail.<\/p>\n \n By last summer, when NHTSA received relevant data from Tesla, about 12.6 thousand electric cars already had such problems. In a letter to the regulator, Tesla disagreed with his allegations, but the company said it would recall the cars to conduct an audit.<\/p>\n \n The EV maker noted that “economically, if not technologically, it cannot be expected that such components could or should work throughout the life of the vehicle.”<\/p>\n \n Replacement of components will be done free of charge, but gradually due to insufficient inventory.<\/p>\n \n Tesla sold about 500,000 cars<\/a> in 2020. Approximately 40% of shipments are in the USA.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n
