During the global cyberattack on American companies and agencies, which in the West is attributed to “Russian hackers”, Microsoft’s cloud service was compromised. Thus, the personal information of IT corporation customers may be compromised. Microsoft itself denies the misuse of the stolen data.
Hackers responsible for a large-scale cyberattack on systems owned by the US Treasury Department, the Department of Homeland Security, the Pentagon and other agencies have also hacked users of Microsoft’s cloud service.
Sources familiar with the situation said that the attack on Microsoft Cloud was carried out through one of the corporation’s partners. In addition, emails from at least one private company were stolen during the hacking. At the same time, Microsoft denies the fact of compromising the personal data of its customers.
“Our investigation into recent attacks has revealed incidents involving the misuse of access credentials, which can take several forms. However, we did not find any vulnerabilities or traces of hacking of cloud services and other Microsoft products, “- said the company’s communications director Jeff Jones.
Information about a possible threat to Microsoft users, received by The Washington Post, was released a few days after the president of the IT corporation Brad Smith officially announced the absence of victims of the hacker attack among the company’s customers.
“I think we can tell you unequivocally that we have no information about customers who have been attacked by this cybercriminal through Microsoft services,” Smith said.
The large-scale cyberattack, which affected a large number of US ministries and agencies, as well as a number of private companies, became known in mid-December. The American media linked cyber-hacking to the APT29 group, also known as Cozy Bear. It is believed that these hackers are sponsored by the Russian government, which gives them tasks.
