Previous research by scientists has shown that terazosin increases cellular energy levels and may prevent or slow the progression of Parkinson’s disease in animal models. Now they have decided to expand their findings and test whether terazosin and related drugs, which can also increase cellular energy production, are associated with a reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease in humans.
Using the US and Danish databases, the team identified 150,000 men who had recently started treatment with terazosin or similar drugs and matched them, based on age and medical history, with 150,000 men who had recently started taking tamsulosin, another drug commonly used for treatment. an enlarged prostate, but does not affect the production of cellular energy.
Scientists tracked the health data of these men. Men taking terazosin were 12–37% less likely to develop Parkinson’s disease during follow-up than men who took tamsulosin. In addition, they found that terazosin was able to reduce the signs, symptoms, and complications of Parkinson’s disease.
The same protective effect was found in both countries, the United States and Denmark, despite the relative differences in population and health care systems. If these results are also confirmed in a future randomized clinical trial, terazosin could provide neuroprotection and potentially prevent rather than just treat Parkinson’s disease.
