The reserve was established in 1945 as part of the Moscow Reserve, as it contains 900 species of plants, 130 species of birds, and 54 species of mammals.
In 1948, a nursery was established to populate the area with the European states of bison from Belovezhskaya Pushcha and the Western Caucasus.
Of great interest to scientists was the fact that the Priotsko Terrasky Reserve was located on the border of the European sub-taiga region with a mixture of deciduous species and a sub-region of deciduous forests. The functions of the reserve were to conserve model ecosystems, unique observation of the natural dynamics of ecosystems and their components (organisms, soil, water, and climate), the study the influence of human factors on changes in the natural environment in the biosphere reserve, and training of environmental conservation researchers.
There are more than 960 species of higher plants in the Priotsko Terracini Reserve.
The reserve includes many trees such as… pine, spruce, linden, oak, birch, and aspen.
Forests, which mainly consist of these tree species, occupy 93% of the reserve area, or 4,537 hectares.
Pryutsk forests predominate with deciduous forest areas. Ostepnenyh ancient forests grow Genista tinctoria, zharnovets, Veronica gray, sedge veresnyakova, etc., and on top of sandy hills and columns – Cladonia different types.
It also includes forests of pine, linden, and oak, which host a mixture of maple and spruce and abundant shrubs of hazel, cowberry, viburnum, and honeysuckle, etc.
