Unsuccessful coup attempt:
An attempted coup in July 2016, according to official figures, killed more than 250 people and injured about two thousand more. Turkish authorities have blamed the uprising on the movement of Islamic preacher Gulen, who has lived in exile in the United States since 1999. Gulen himself denies allegations of involvement in the coup.
After the suppression of the coup, the Turkish authorities sharply increased the pressure on the opposition. Hundreds of court hearings took place across the country. Tens of thousands of people were detained and arrested, tens of thousands of civil servants lost their jobs. According to official data, more than 20.5 thousand people have been released from the Turkish Armed Forces alone.
