Spanish travel reservation group Amadeus said reservation volumes in March were the highest since the coronavirus pandemic began wreaking havoc on the airline industry.
Despite movement restrictions that remain in place in many parts of the world, Amadeus said it has seen an increase in air bookings and boarding passengers.
“By volume, it was the best performing month since February 2020. Until April, we saw further improvement,” CEO Luis Maruto said in a statement.
Shares in the Spanish group rose 3.9 percent.
The contraction in air bookings was 79% in the fourth quarter and 90% in the third quarter.
Governments’ tourism industry is urging to reopen international travel while speeding up the vaccination process. But the soaring cases of Covid-19 in India and elsewhere, fears of new virus variants, and the complexity of organizing medical checks may impede the recovery.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said global passenger traffic improved in March, but revenue-per-kilometers (RPKs) were 67.2 percent lower compared to the pre-crisis level.
The industry panel now expects global air traffic to recover to 43 percent from its pre-crisis level in 2021.
Amadeus swung to a slightly narrower-than-expected adjusted loss of € 83.1 million ($ 100.2 million) in the first quarter. Analysts expected a quarterly loss of 93.5 million euros.
