Due to the ongoing Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic, the heads at the New Giza Museum decided not to hire a global company to manage the event.
Instead, Atef Moftah, the general supervisor of the museum project, told MENA that planning sessions are being held with a local company chosen to organize the opening ceremony.
He said that the opening ceremony aimed to dazzle the world as befits this prestigious project.
The Grand Egyptian Museum, one of Egypt’s giant national projects, has suffered a series of setbacks since construction began in 2006 and was finally scheduled to open to the public last year.
Muftah indicated that the timing of the opening was determined based on the global situation with regard to COVID-19 health and safety issues, adding that the contract for managing and operating the museum’s services was won by the Hassan Allam alliance consisting of Egypt. Emirati and American companies.
On the other hand, he said that preparations have been completed to transfer the first Khufu ship next month from the current exhibition space near the pyramids to its new permanent location in the Grand Egyptian Museum.
It will be displayed in a special section of the museum’s solar boats on an area of 15,000 square meters, equivalent to the area of the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir.
Muftah indicated that the ship’s hull has been preserved from collapse and that it will be displayed in a way that represents its important archaeological value.
An Egyptian-Japanese project is currently underway to restore and extract wood from the second Khufu ship as part of a cooperation plan involving the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Waseda University in Tokyo, and Higashi Nippon International University.
The project, which has the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency, is headed by the Japanese Egyptologist Sakuji Yoshimura.
