Sana Dahaba, chief executive of the National Disaster Management Agency, told AFP that the government had placed 1,531 people in mosques and other public buildings displaced by the severe weather. Ten more people were killed in the storm and several others were injured.
Gambian President Adam Barrow convened an emergency meeting to assess the damage.
The degree of destruction remains unclear. However, the president’s statement said that as a result of the hurricane in some parts of the country were cut off electricity and water supply.
“The president calls on the good Samaritans to provide all possible support to ease the burden on the affected families, while his government assesses the necessary support,” the statement said.
