Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – July 15, 2021 – Ukraine News
291 people’s deputies voted for.
Avakov did not address parliamentarians.
Avakov was in a position since February 27, 2014.
Officially, the reasons for Avakov’s resignation, which he submitted on July 13, are unknown.
“I believe that Arsen Avakov is a statesman who did everything to strengthen the country. However, no one is forever in office, so he wrote his resignation. He will not cling to his post but will be happy to help the president, give advice, “Avakov’s deputy Anton Gerashchenko commented on the situation.
Most of the comments about the resignation came down to the fact that “the time has come” because there was an agreement between him and the President that Avakov would resign for the first time. However, according to rumors, there was a conflict between Avakov and Zelensky that was brewing for a long time. Zelensky’s statement that he was communicating with Yana Duhar, a suspect in the murder of Pavel Sheremet, is considered a public manifestation.
Avakov’s activity as a minister
Avakov has been in office since February 27, 2014. As interior minister, he faced Russian aggression, visiting Crimea when Russia began its occupation. Under his command, an operation was carried out to liberate the Kharkiv Regional State Administration building from separatists in April 2014. He wrote a book about these events “2014. Moments of Kharkiv spring “.
In 2015, he launched a police reform that was transformed into the National Police. As part of the reform, the traffic police was disbanded. The police were cleansed of old faces, however, this cleansing, according to many, was not completed.
Almost the entire term of office Avakov was criticized. His activities were accompanied by active protests, often involving high-profile criminal cases, such as the attack on activist Kateryna Handyuk, the rape at the Kagarlyk police station, and the murder of 5-year-old Kirill Tlyavov.
Also during Avakov’s stay, a scandal broke out with the purchase of tactical equipment for the Ukrainian military, at inflated prices. The scandal escalated into criminal proceedings, in which the minister’s son became a participant. The case was called “Avakov’s backpacks.” The minister’s son was not convicted – another participant in the proceedings took all the blame.
A successful case as a minister was the active participation in the release of Ukrainian soldier Vitaliy Markiv, who was sentenced by an Italian court to 24 years in prison for the murder of Italian photojournalist Andrea Rockelli and his Russian translator and journalist Andrei Mironov during the 2014 battles near Slovyansk. It was the Ministry of Internal Affairs that insisted on an appellate review of the case, thanks to which Markiv was released.
