Tajikistan is preparing to accept up to 100,000 refugees from neighboring Afghanistan, where fighting has intensified as the withdrawal of troops under the command of the United States, a senior Tajik official said on Friday, Reuters reports.

Taliban insurgents are gaining control of growing territory in Afghanistan, which the Pentagon estimates now covers more than half of Afghanistan’s district centers.
Deputy Chairman of the Tajik Emergency Committee Emomali Ibrahimzode said at a briefing on Friday that the former Soviet republic is already building two large warehouses to store supplies for refugees in the border areas of Khatlon and Gorno-Badakhshan.
Several hundred peaceful Afghans fled to Tajikistan this month, but the Dushanbe government says they have already returned to Afghanistan.
