Further changes in the temperature regime may lead to the fact that two-thirds of the territory of Ukraine will become a zone of risky agriculture. This was stated by Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Roman Leshchenko.
Kyiv. Ukraine. Ukraine Gate – July 24, 2021 – Agriculture
According to him, agriculture is very vulnerable to climate change, and already today in Ukraine the climatic zones of agriculture are shifting to the north “by hundreds of kilometers.”
“We see that the temperature has risen by more than 1 degree Celsius in 10 years. And this has a very serious impact on the agricultural area. Objectively speaking, with such dynamics as today, we can reach a situation where 2/3 of the territory of Ukraine will become a zone of risky agriculture, “Roman Leshchenko said.
According to the government official, global climate change poses very great threats to agriculture – first of all, declining productivity, loss of ecosystem resilience, and deteriorating quality of life.
“We believe that we need to move to more economical means of tillage in terms of technology. Increase the share of organic products. The implementation of the irrigation and reclamation policy, the strategy of which was laid down by the government in 2019, is very important, ”the Minister stressed.
According to him, the issue of “punishment and control for illegal plowing of protected areas, restoration of forest belts” and a group of issues related to “conservation of land for afforestation, alkalization, and revitalization” is very important.
“The need for a full-scale revision of the mechanisms for implementing both agricultural and environmental policies is timely,” the minister said.
