Water streams damaged bridges and dams washed away roads and sown areas in Hamgyon-Pukto and Hamgyong-named provinces. In particular, 500 mm of precipitation fell in Hamgyon-Pukto from 1 to 6 August.
The State Hydrometeorological Administration of the DPRK said that new showers are expected in August, which could lead to even greater economic damage.
Earlier, the local party newspaper Nodon Sinmun reported that the DPRK was taking steps in advance to combat the effects of possible floods in major rice production areas to minimize possible damage from natural disasters.
The DPRK has been experiencing chronic food shortages for decades, but recently the situation has worsened due to a pandemic of coronavirus infection, a number of natural disasters, and the actual closure of borders. According to UN estimates, about 10.9 million (42.2%) North Korean citizens suffered from malnutrition in the period from 2018 to 2020.
