About 18 months ago, the kingdom closed its borders to foreign pilgrims due to a coronavirus pandemic.
Initially, permits will be issued to 60,000 Umrah pilgrims a month, but that number will gradually increase to two million a month, the report said.
The statement said foreign pilgrims would be required to provide COVID-19 vaccination certificates along with a request for Umrah.
Vaccinated pilgrims from countries banned from entering Saudi Arabia will be subject to institutional quarantine upon arrival.
Umrah is a pilgrimage to the two holy places of Islam in the cities of Mecca and Medina, which can be done at any time of the year. It is different from the Hajj, which is performed once a year.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted both pilgrimages, which are usually the kingdom’s key sources of income. Together, they earned about $ 12 billion a year in pre-quarantine times for the treasury.
The Hajj took place in July this year and last year, albeit on a smaller scale.
In total, about 532,000 coronavirus cases and more than 8,300 deaths have been reported in Saudi Arabia.
