Today, August 23, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Serhiy Shkarlet met with the ideologist of the PISA International Quality of Education Survey Andreas Schleicher.

“ The development of practical skills in the educational process is very important for the formation of the New Ukrainian School. Today we focus on improving students’ reading, math, and science literacy. One of the important tasks in the development of education – the introduction of a dual system is a key instrument of individual competition in the labor market “, – said Sergey Shkarlet.
Ukraine joined the PISA survey in 2016 (2018 cycle). The Ukrainian Center for Educational Quality Assessment has been identified as the organization responsible for conducting the study. The first cycle for the study country was conducted in paper format. The results of PISA-2018 were widely discussed by stakeholders in the field of education.
This year the pilot stage of PISA-2022 is provided, the main stage will take place next year. A report on the results of this series of studies will be published in December 2023.
The parties also discussed Ukraine’s participation in the TALIS (Teaching and Learning International Survey), which involves teachers and heads of educational institutions. The research is intended for in-depth analysis of pedagogical practices used in educational institutions, search for effective teaching methods, identification of factors influencing the effectiveness of the educational process, study of the conditions in which teachers work in different countries.
In addition, during the meeting, Minister Serhiy Shkarlet acquainted Mr. Andreas Schleicher in detail with the reforms in the field of education and science of Ukraine.
PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) has been conducted by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) since 2000. Objectives of the study:
studying and comparing educational systems around the world by measuring students’ reading, math, and science literacy using tools that focus on competencies rather than school curricula;
identification of factors that affect the successful learning of students;
tracking trends in education within individual countries as well as in the world.
Today it is the largest study of the quality of education in the world, involving more than 85 countries. The study is conducted within three-year cycles, in each of which the pilot and main stages of the study are provided. Pilot stage – testing of research tools; the main stage is the collection of analytical data (testing and questionnaires of adolescents, as well as questionnaires of teachers). The name of the study of a particular cycle is determined by the year when the main stage of the study. The participants in the study from each country are 15-year-old adolescents, who are selected by statistical research organizers using statistical methods. Countries conduct research in paper or computer formats.
