“It is important for Ukraine that during the 76th session of the General Assembly, under your chairmanship, member states hold a full-fledged debate within the Ukrainian section on the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine,” the President was quoted as saying by the President’s Office.
Thus, the President stressed the importance of approving at the plenary session two General Assembly resolutions that Ukraine and its partners plan to submit: “The human rights situation in the temporarily occupied Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, Ukraine” and “The problem of the militarization of the Autonomous Republic Sevastopol, Ukraine, as well as parts of the Black and Azov Seas.
“These documents are a practical tool for protecting human rights in the occupied territories and preventing the further transformation of Crimea into a military base with nuclear weapons – a direct threat to global security,” said the President of Ukraine.
Zelensky also briefed his interlocutor on the results of the Crimean Platform summit and stressed that achieving the ultimate goal of this initiative – the return of Crimea – is a way to restore respect for the UN Charter.
He stressed that the key priority for Ukraine within the UN is to counter Russian aggression and restore territorial integrity, de-occupation of Donbas and Crimea.
The United Nations did not participate in the inaugural summit of the Crimean Platform held in Kyiv on August 23.
According to Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, the UN ignored the summit and was not represented at it for “purely political reasons.”
