“Europe’s gas blackmail must end forever. We are grateful to the House of Representatives for including in the NDAA an amendment that will stop Nord Stream 2. We appeal to all friends of Ukraine and the United States in the US Senate to support this rule at the Senate level,” he wrote. Zelensky.
The amendment, which the president mentions, calls for sanctions against the pipeline operator Nord Stream 2 AG, founded by Gazprom. “Nord Stream – 2” – the main gas pipeline from Russia to Germany through the Baltic Sea with a length of 1,234 km (2,468 km on two lines). It is an extension of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. The pipeline passes through the exclusive economic zones and territorial waters of five countries: Germany, Denmark, Russia, Finland and Sweden. The length of the Russian section of the pipeline is 118 km, Finnish – 374 km, Swedish – 510 km, Danish – 147 km, German – 85 km.
On June 10, 2021, the construction of the first of the two strands of the gas pipeline was completed.
According to the US State Department, the project could lead to the “economic collapse of Ukraine.” The project’s impact assessments for Ukraine’s economy address aspects such as the loss of revenues from transit payments and the cessation of “virtual reverse”.
