Taking a certain group of antidepressants – selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) – reduces the risk of death in patients with COVID-19. This is stated in a study by scientists from the Universities of California and Stanford, published in the journal JAMA .

The researchers analyzed the medical records of 500,000 patients in the United States. From January to September 2020, 83.5 thousand of them were diagnosed with coronavirus. In this group of 3.4 thousand people were appointed SIZZS.
The researchers compared the results of coronavirus infection in those taking antidepressants with patients with COVID-19 in the control group, who were selected according to age, sex, nationality and the presence of comorbidities. As a result, they found that the risk of death in those taking fluoxetine (a drug from the SSRI group) was 28% lower than in the control group. Those who took fluoxetine or fluvoxamine (another drug from the SSRI group) had a 26% lower risk. In general, the use of any SSRIs was associated with an 8% reduction in the risk of death from COVID-19, the study said.
At the same time, the researchers noted that the effectiveness of antidepressants in reducing coronavirus mortality could only be claimed after large-scale randomized clinical trials.
We will remind
Earlier, researchers at the Yale School of Public Health and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte said that unvaccinated people who had already become ill with the coronavirus could relapse into COVID-19 in as little as three months because the immune system remained unstable.
