Katyusha was found dead in her aviary on December 24, the Berlin Zoo said on Monday. Polar bears usually live up to 25-30 years. Katyusha had heart problems, and for some time she needed medical attention.
“In the coming weeks, we will decide what to do with the polar bear enclosure at the zoo,” said the Berlin Zoo.
Two polar bears still live in Berlin’s Tirpark, which is owned by the same owner as the Berlin Zoo.
Katyusha was born in 1984 at the Karlsruhe Zoo and a year later came to the Berlin Zoo. She lived with the polar bear Knut, one of the biggest stars of the Berlin Zoo, until in 2011 he died suddenly of a brain disease.
