New Year
The celebration of the New Year began in the period of Mesopotamian civilization, but the holiday then fell in the spring. The celebrations lasted 12 days. This time was considered a period of rebirth, the victory of good over evil. Even the laws were temporarily out of force, so even the Babylonian kings traveled outside the city during this 12-day period so as not to interfere with their people having fun.
New Years are celebrated differently in different countries. For example, in Ukraine, celebrating the beginning of the year began on January 1, 1700. The tradition was borrowed in the Netherlands and other Western European countries. Earlier, our ancestors started the new year on September 1. The celebration of the New Year in Ukraine had a deeply religious and customary basis.
Remembrance Day of St. Elijah of Murom
January 1 in the church calendar is the day of remembrance of St. Elijah of Murom. His last name was Boots, and he lived in the XII century. He was a monk of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. He died around 1180.
Very little is known about the life of St. Elijah. It is known that he was born into a simple peasant family. In his youth and childhood he had paralysis, which miraculously healed him. Before the vows he was a warrior who became famous for his considerable strength and his feats.
It is interesting that Ilya Muromets is a hero not only of Ukrainian epics. His life and military merits can be learned from the German epic poems of the XIII century, which were based on earlier legends.
Rev. Ilya Muromets was officially canonized in 1643. His relics now rest in the Near Caves.
