The WHO states that early detection and treatment of cancer can reduce the associated mortality. Maxim Yermakov, a clinical oncologist at the LISOD Hospital of Israeli Oncology, says : Why a healthy person should be checked by the body, whether it helps to avoid the disease and what tests are needed and which can be avoided – read in our article.
What is an oncological check-up of the body? Why do you need it?
In terms of oncology, check-up is a set of tests that reliably help reduce mortality from malignant tumors. This is the ultimate goal of screening.
Does body checking really help you avoid cancer?
So, for example, at a colonoscopy the doctor has an opportunity to remove polyps of intestines which can lead to emergence of a malignant tumor. Or gynecological screening allows you to detect precancerous changes and treat them in time.
However, a check-up does not always help to avoid illness. In most cases, it can be used to detect the disease at an early stage, when it is most likely curable.
Which checks are really needed and which are outright marketing?
Mammography (in the future – MRI of the mammary glands), gastroscopy, colonoscopy, PAP test, dermatoscopy, low-dose computed tomography of the chest (for certain groups – ed.), Urologist examination and blood test for prostate-specific antigen.
Surprisingly, oncomarkers do not have oncological specificity – these indicators of blood can change at the simplest inflammatory process.
Who needs to be checked and at what age? Where better to do it?
Mammography – all women over 40 once a year.
All men over the age of 40 should have a blood test for prostate-specific antigen (PSA) plus a urologist once a year.
Gastroscopy and colonoscopy – for the first time all without exception after 50 years, then – depending on the results of the study.
Low-dose CT of the lungs – age over 50 years, smokers with experience over 20 years – is a basic study, which depends on the further frequency of diagnosis.
PAP test – women aged 21 to 65 years – with a normal test result – every 2 years.
It is better to check-up in a specialized oncology center, whose doctors have the most experience in the diagnosis, early detection and, if necessary, treatment of malignant tumors. At the LISOD Hospital of Israeli Oncology, you can comfortably and painlessly be screened in one day.
On the topic
To test whether a patient is at risk, LISOD Hospital of Israel has developed a special test based on a number of studies that directly influence some factors (such as smoking or malnutrition, ed.) On the occurrence of malignancies .
