Quote
“I am anxiously watching the rising tensions that threaten to strike a new blow to peace in Ukraine and undermine security across the European continent, with even wider consequences. I urge all people of good will to offer prayers to Almighty God so that every political action and initiative may serve the common human brotherhood more than partial interests. He who pursues his own goals by harming others despises man’s own calling, because we are all created by brothers and sisters. Therefore, with concern, given the existing tensions, I suggest that next Wednesday, January 26, be the Day of Prayer for Peace, “said Francis .

For the past few months, Ukrainian authorities and Western partners have been drawing attention to Russia’s aggravation of the security situation in Donbas, the build-up of Russian forces along the border with Ukraine, the danger of a new Russian invasion and growing Russian disinformation.
At the end of last year, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said that 122,000 Russian servicemen were at a distance of 200 km and 143.5 thousand servicemen 400 km from the Russian-Ukrainian border.
The New York Times, citing its own sources, reports that the number of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine has remained stable in recent weeks, but Russian President Vladimir Putin has begun steps to transfer military helicopters.
Putin’s main demand is assurances from the United States and its allies that NATO will not expand further east and will not deploy weapons systems there that Russia considers a threat.
