Blood clots usually form in the veins of the legs, arms, groin. It is when they break away and move to other parts of the body, such as the lungs, that they pose a danger. Typically, risk factors for blood clotting include surgery, cancer, and pregnancy. However, one nutrient found in eggs and meat can also increase the risk of blood clotting. This is choline, which in the required amount is considered an important nutrient for health. It supports various body functions, including cell growth and metabolism.
The body produces some choline, but most of it comes from food sources. Consumption of nutrients in high concentrations can lead to increased blood clotting. Researchers suggest that bacteria in the gut may interact with choline to form a compound that stimulates platelet aggregation, thereby forming a blood clot. Observations have shown that choline interacts with intestinal bacteria to produce a substance called TMAO.
For their study, experts provided oral choline supplements to healthy vegetarians and omnivores. In both groups there was a 10-fold increase in plasma TMAO levels after ingestion. They also observed an increase in platelet sensitivity, which is a risk factor for thrombotic events.
The author of the study, Stanley L. Haisen, noted that in previous studies, this substance was associated with an increased risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke. It should be noted that the concentrations of choline contained in food are generally safe, but the use of choline supplements can be dangerous to health, so they should be taken only on the advice of a doctor.
Other eating habits that may increase the risk of blood clotting include dehydration. The fact is that when the body is deprived of fluid, blood vessels can narrow.
