International Valentine’s Day
Another name is Valentine’s Day. It is an annual holiday named after St. Valentine, who is commemorated on this day during the liturgy by the Catholic Church.
It is believed that Valentine’s Day in Christian times replaced the pagan holiday of Lupercalia (in honor of the god Faun), which was celebrated annually on February 14. This replacement occurred in 496 after the decree of Pope Gelasius I.
This holiday became very popular in Western Europe after the XV century. According to legend, the invention of “Valentine’s Day” is attributed to the Duke of Orleans Charles. In 1415, while in English captivity after the Battle of Azencourt, he allegedly sent poetic love messages to his wife from a London prison. One of the then “valentines” is now stored in the British Museum. In the United States, this holiday has been celebrated since 1777.
However, in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Valentine is not officially considered the patron saint of lovers, but the patron saint of people suffering from nervous diseases: icons often depict Valentine in the clothes of a priest or bishop who heals a young man from epilepsy. According to church legends, at the tomb of St. Valentina, a young man with epilepsy, prayed for a long time – and recovered.
Saints Cyril and Methodius
These Slavic brothers were educators and preachers of Christianity, creators of the Cyrillic alphabet, the first translators of liturgical books into the Slavic language.
Cyril and Methodius laid the foundations of Slavic writing and literature.
The originals of Cyril and Methodius have not survived. Scholars consider Cyril’s works “Alphabetical Prayer”, “Prologue to the Gospel” and others. Saints Cyril and Methodius Day is celebrated by Catholics on February 14, Orthodox and Catholics of the Eastern Rite – on May 24.
