How to act if during your stay abroad you have lost / stolen your passport, explainsthe Office of the State Migration Service in the Zaporozhye region.
- Write a statement to the police
First of all, you need to contact the nearest police station to draw up a statement about the loss or theft of your passport. In the text of the application, it is advisable to list all the visas and marks that were affixed in the passport in the country of your stay (if possible). Based on the results of receiving such an application, you should be given a copy of the protocol or a certificate of temporary absence of a passport.
- Contact the embassy
With a certificate obtained from the police, you need to contact the local embassy of Ukraine.
At the embassy, as a general rule, an application form is filled out to obtain a temporary identity card for returning to Ukraine. You will need to provide all the requested documentation and information about yourself: a police certificate / protocol, documents confirming your identity and citizenship (for example, a copy of your internal or foreign passport, driver’s license, student ID, etc.), a receipt for payment of the consular fee.
- Verify your identity
If you do not have a single document proving your identity and citizenship with you, you will need to find two citizens of Ukraine who are also in the country of your current stay and will be able to become witnesses to confirm your identity and citizenship. If it is not possible to find witnesses, you need to indicate the authority that issued you the lost passport, in order for the consular staff to send a corresponding request to confirm the fact of issuing the lost document.
Based on the documents and information you submitted, after establishing your identity and citizenship, the consulate staff will issue a temporary identity card to return to Ukraine.
- Contact the Migration Service
After returning home, it is advisable to notify the Migration Service about the loss of the document. To issue a new passport, instead of the lost one, you need to submit to the SMS department an internal passport of a citizen of Ukraine and a document confirming the payment of the administrative fee.
Prepare before your trip:
- keep for yourself useful contacts of the Ukrainian embassy or consulate of Ukraine in the country you are going to visit (all contacts are available on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs);
- it will not be superfluous to make photocopies of your main documents and store them separately from the originals; keep passports (foreign and domestic) separately from each other;
- you should not leave your belongings and documents unattended, do not give them on bail and do not transfer them to third parties.
