The EU is preparing to impose additional sanctions against Moscow after reports of atrocities following the withdrawal of the Russian army from the outskirts of Kiev.
“EU ambassadors are expected to discuss a new package of measures on Wednesday, according to a diplomat who knows about the plans,” the newspaper said.
Future measures proposed by some member states include “more individual sanctions, a ban on Russian ships from using EU ports, more export restrictions and an embargo on energy supplies such as coal, oil or gas – which Ukraine has long demanded but which were previously opposed by some major European economies. “
Calls for sanctions against Russia’s energy exports, on which the EU is heavily dependent, have become louder, the newspaper said.
In Italy, one of the EU countries most dependent on Russian gas, Enrico Letta, leader of the center-left Democratic Party and a junior partner in Prime Minister Mario Draghi’s national unity government, called for a “full oil and gas embargo on Russia”.
Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said the purchase of Russian oil and gas was a “financing of war crimes.” The Baltic state said it was the first in the EU to stop importing gas from Moscow.
Addition
The publication notes that the promise to intensify punitive measures against Russia followed a sharp condemnation by the West of alleged Russian war crimes against unarmed Ukrainian civilians in recently liberated areas around Kyiv.
