A group of scientists has developed a mobile application that allows visually impaired people to enjoy the Christmas lights in Madrid
App “Affordable Christmas” developed by researchers from the University of Madrid Carlos III
The free application is available for Android and iOS; it uses a system of sound descriptions that tell what a person is looking at at the moment.
It starts working automatically when the user activates the geolocation system. After that, an audio description is played, which conveys information about the scenes represented in light and colors, as well as additional information about how it was created.
In addition, the application allows you to enjoy the Christmas lights of Madrid without being near them, but simply scrolling through the list of streets. Each of them describes the light sources at that location.
The Affordable Christmas tour consists of twenty places to visit, including Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de Canalejas, and offers three audio description formats: one uses real voices, the other uses robotic ones. and in the third, adapted speech for a younger audience.
The aim of Affordable Christmas is to let everyone experience the Christmas atmosphere of Madrid.
