“We believe it is right to change the use of names in solidarity with the Belarusian democratic movement,” said Prime Minister Jonas Gar Store.
Details
The name change was approved on the International Day of Solidarity with Belarus. Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Heutfeldt personally called Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the leader of the Belarusian opposition, and announced the changes.
“She was happy and thanked for the decision,” the minister said.
The Norwegian Foreign Ministry notes that the decision was made following Sweden and Denmark, which changed the name of Belarus in 2019 and 2021, respectively.
