Hundreds of Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Shavuot.
Details
A statement from the Jordanian Department of the Islamic Waqf, which deals with holy sites in Jerusalem, said more than 450 settlers had entered the complex through the Al-Mugarba Gate under the protection of Israeli police.
According to the statement, a large number of Israeli police were deployed on the spot and closed the Al-Qibli Mosque, one of the mosques of the Al-Aqsa complex.
Settlers have previously urged supporters to storm the Al-Aqsa complex to celebrate the Jewish holiday of Shavuot (Feast of Weeks), which will last until Monday.
Addition
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the third most important shrine in the world for Muslims. The Jews call this area the “Temple Mount”, claiming that in ancient times there were two Jewish temples.
Since 2003, Israel has allowed settlers into the area almost daily.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. He annexed the entire city in 1980, which was never recognized by the international community.
