Ukraine Gate – Kyiv – June 8, 2022- The consequences of the war in Ukraine have led to a serious cost of living crisis that no country or community can avoid, according to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
According to a correspondent in New York, he stated this on Wednesday at a press conference dedicated to the presentation of a report on the impact of the conflict on food security, energy and financing in the world. Earlier, he called the crisis “three-dimensional.”
The UN Secretary General said that countries must act now to save lives and livelihoods.
“Three months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, we are facing a new reality,” he said. – For those who are on the ground, every day brings new bloodshed and suffering. And for people all over the world, war threatens an unprecedented wave of hunger and poverty, social and economic chaos. “
In addition, the crisis is exacerbating the effects of other challenges facing countries, such as climate change, COVID-19 and resource inequalities for recovery from the pandemic, he added.
According to the report , the number of people experiencing acute food shortages has grown from 135 million to 276 million in the two years of the pandemic. Due to the war, this figure will increase to 323 million.
It is noted that 1.6 billion people in 94 countries are affected by at least one aspect of the crisis, about 1.2 billion – all three.
The document calls for stabilizing food and fuel prices, implementing social protection systems and increasing financial support for developing countries.
