Under the new rules, teenagers who fled the war in Ukraine will be allowed to come to the UK alone, the newspaper notes.
About 1,000 unaccompanied minors were previously suspended as the Home for Ukraine program required young people to travel with a guardian.
Yes, there is a story of Valya, who, like hundreds of other Ukrainian teenagers, applied within the program. But she was first told that her visa was blocked when the country’s Interior Ministry changed its leadership, requiring people under the age of 18 to travel with or reunite with a parent or guardian in the UK.
Now, on the eve of the expected change in the rules on Wednesday, which will allow more unaccompanied teenagers to come to the UK, Valya has received a visa and intends to stay with her sponsors.
Changing the rule should only benefit unaccompanied minors who are already in the system.
For security reasons, their sponsors in the UK should be either relatives or acquaintances of their parents, such as close family friends.
In exceptional cases, minors may remain in the family where they were sent, but they will need the approval of the government and local authorities after intensive security checks. Adolescents are believed to be more likely to succeed in applying this way because they need less support than children.
A government spokesman said they were studying whether it was safe to open a Home for Ukraine program for more children. “We are responsible for the safety of children, and as the public rightly expects, we have put in place reliable processes to protect them upon arrival in the country,” the spokesman said.
Addition
In March, the United Kingdom simplified the visa application system for Ukrainian refugees.
