The vaccine from the Danish manufacturer Bavarian Nordic is currently the only one licensed specifically for the treatment of monkeypox. Further deliveries will take place in a few weeks. Priority will be given to countries with the highest incidence.
Doses of the vaccine will be distributed according to the population of each country, as was the case during the COVID-19 pandemic, writes Euroactiv.
Vaccinations will be available for certain risk groups. A spokesman for the European Commission explained that because the virus is spread through close skin-to-skin contact, the risk of spreading it cannot be compared to the risks of COVID-19.
The vaccine was purchased by the EU Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Authority (HERA) through the EU4Health program.
In addition, the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) Committee on Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has announced the start of a review of data to expand the use of Imvanex, which is currently approved in the EU for the prevention of smallpox in adults, including protection against monkeypox. However, as vaccine stocks within the unit are currently limited, the EMA recommends the use of Jynneos, the US version of Imvanex.
Before
The WHO has reported more than 3,200 confirmed cases of monkeypox and one death in the current outbreak.
