Two Russian planes have taken off from Bulgaria carrying Russian diplomats and their families amid a mass expulsion that has sparked a sharp rise in tensions between the countries.

One high-ranking Russian diplomat told reporters at the airport in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, before departure, that he was among 70 Russian diplomatic employees who were declared “persona non grata”.
The decision to expel Russians from Bulgaria was announced by Acting Prime Minister Kyril Petkov, who took a strong stance against Russia after it invaded Ukraine on February 24. Petkov claimed that Moscow used “hybrid warfare” tactics to topple his government.
Context
The press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmytro Peskov, said that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will consider the possible closure of the Russian embassy in Sofia after the Bulgarian government decided to expel 70 Russian diplomats from the country. Earlier, its head Eleonora Mitrofanova spoke about the possibility of closing the embassy, who even threatened Bulgaria with breaking diplomatic relations.
