“We have had a series of high-level talks with our Chinese counterparts about what we expect not only from the People’s Republic of China, but also from all responsible members of the international community regarding Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine. I think this will be another opportunity to talk frankly on this occasion and convey our expectations regarding what we expect from China in the context of Ukraine,” said US Assistant Secretary for Economic and Business Affairs Ramin Tolui.

Blinken is on his way to Bali to attend the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting before visiting Thailand. The meeting with the representative of China, scheduled for Saturday, will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two since October, amid heightened geopolitical tensions between the United States and China, which declared “boundless” friendship with Russia just before the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
During the call with his Chinese counterpart, Blinken plans to emphasize the US’s commitment to “intensive diplomacy” with Beijing and the importance of “responsibly managing the intense competition” between the two countries, said East Asian and Pacific Affairs Secretary Daniel Kritenbrink. He added that the United States wants to do everything possible to “prevent any miscalculation that could inadvertently lead to conflict and confrontation.”
Let’s add
Blinken will lead efforts at the G20 meeting, whose members represent roughly 80 percent of global GDP, to focus attention on the role of Russia’s invasion and the effective blockade of Ukrainian grain exports in fueling the international food crisis.
As reported, the US Secretary of State does not intend to meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov at the summit.
