“Pursuant to Section 517 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended (22 USC 2321k), I am announcing my intention to revoke Afghanistan’s status as a major non-NATO ally,” the document reads.
Addition
As you know, in 2012, the United States named Afghanistan a major non-NATO ally, which opened the way for the two countries to maintain defense and economic relations. Unlike the US’s NATO allies, bound to each other by a common defense pact, Afghanistan, as a non-NATO ally, has no guarantees of mutual protection. It is eligible for loans and is also a storage location for military reserve stocks owned by the United States.
Private companies from this country can bid on contracts for the maintenance, repair or overhaul of US military equipment abroad.
Allied status entitles Afghanistan to receive military training and aid, including expedited sales and leases of military equipment, even after NATO troops have left the country.
According to the State Department, with the cancellation of Afghanistan’s status, the US will have 18 major non-NATO allies. These are Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, South Korea, Thailand and Tunisia.
