As noted, Scholz promised to provide Ukraine with long-term security guarantees, but not automatic military aid in the event of an attack. Currently, Berlin is discussing with other states and Ukraine what exactly such guarantees might look like.
The chancellor emphasizes that, obviously, the guarantees cannot be the same as stipulated in Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which states that an attack on one country is an attack on all countries of the Alliance. He believes that, most likely, they should be “adapted to the specific situation.”
Scholz did not provide more details, but noted that it is possible to use “highly effective sanctions” against Russia.
