“Michael Frank, director of the association of Swiss electricity companies VSE, said that Switzerland plans to introduce increasingly strict energy-saving measures if necessary,” the report said.
Details
It said the government would first ask for voluntary savings measures – a public awareness campaign is due to take place next month – then it could limit secondary uses such as shop window lighting, use of mobile heaters or night lighting, a briefing in Bern said.
Then, in an extreme scenario, the government could order approximately 30,000 companies to save up to 30% of their energy consumption. It is estimated that these first three phases can reduce electricity demand by 25-30%.
In extreme cases, Bern can turn off part of the power grid.
Switzerland could resort to continuous four-hour blackouts in regions if Europe’s energy crisis leads to winter power shortages, a senior utility official said.
Addition
The EU plans to cut gas consumption by 15% by next spring, due to fears that Russia may stop supplying the blue fuel.
