“ESA took the first steps in this direction already this spring, when on March 17 it announced the suspension of the ExoMars joint program. This project was very ambitious and meant a lot to Russia, as it was the largest joint project of scientific research cooperation in the space sphere between ESA and the Russian Federation. It envisioned building, launching and sharing a rover to detect life on Mars. Its implementation was started in 2016, and the launch of the rover was planned for 2022 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome,” Derzhkosmos reported.
Such a decision, as indicated, will set Russia back many years in the development of outer space. In addition, it will block the Russian Federation’s access to European space technologies and tools that are developed for joint projects. In addition, the future participation of Russia in joint space initiatives with Europe is now under great question.

As for Ukraine’s cooperation with ESA, the Ukrainian space industry is now actively interacting with European colleagues regarding joint projects in the medium and long term.
“Ukraine, despite the war, continues to have significant potential for participation in the implementation of joint projects, in particular with ESA, with which the State Space Agency has significantly intensified cooperation today. From the point of view of science and technology, we have much to offer Europe in its activities to explore the Red Planet. The Ukrainian space industry is ready to cooperate with ESA in matters of Mars exploration. DKA actively interacts with ESA regarding the determination of directions and forms of development of cooperation for the medium and long-term future,” Derzhkosmos noted.
