“The fact is that we have an international agreement, signed and ratified by both parties. Currently, no such bill should be considered in the parliament. It was agreed to implement this protocol together, and therefore we believe that the simple fact that the bill is being introduced to the parliament , to unilaterally change the provisions of the protocol, is inappropriate. For more than a year, the European Commission refrained from launching infringement procedures in order to create space for joint solutions with London. But Great Britain’s reluctance to participate in meaningful discussions and the transfer of the bill on the protocol to the parliament of the kingdom forced to take more drastic steps, the TV channel notes.
The UK has two months to present its explanations, after which the European Commission intends to take further action.
Compliance with the provisions of the Protocol is very important for Northern Ireland: it will allow it to continue to enjoy privileged access to the European Single Market and is necessary to protect the health, safety and security of EU citizens and the integrity of the Single Market.
The July 22 decision marks the start of formal infringement procedures set out in Article 12(4) of the Protocol in conjunction with Article 258 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. The letters sent to Great Britain request that its authorities take immediate remedial measures to restore compliance with the Protocol.
